Adolescent Girls and Young Women Department (AGYWD)

The AGYW Department helps empower girls and young mothers and works to shift social and cultural norms toward the prevention of gender violence and HIV among them. This department implements a number of adolescent girl- and young mother-centred interventions that aim at empowering them to live healthier and happier lives. Projects under this department are designed to achieve a better way of improving girls’ social inclusion, education, health, and access to economic resources and opportunities so that they can stay in school longer and succeed, avoid early marriages, delay sexual activity, and prevent unintended pregnancy, HIV, and other STIs. It is currently heading one major project, called Safe, Healthy and Productive Communities for Tanzanian Girls and Young Women.  This project had two major programs, SASA! and Power to Girls. These programs work to build awareness of injustices to women and girls, and to spark change in community norms.
